Biography

Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, known professionally as Daddy Yankee, was born on February 3, 1977, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and has established himself as one of the most transformative and influential figures in the history of Latin music, being recognized as the "King of Reggaeton" and one of the fundamental pioneers of the genre. He is widely recognized as the creator of the term "reggaeton", which he coined in 1991 to describe the new musical genre emerging in Puerto Rico, fusing elements of reggae, dancehall, hip hop, and Latin music. Initially, Daddy Yankee aspired to be a professional baseball player and even tried out for the Seattle Mariners of the MLB. However, an incident in which he was shot in the leg while taking a break from a recording session changed his path, leading him to focus entirely on music. From an early age, he showed interest in music, influenced by genres like dancehall and hip hop. At the age of 11, he began composing and performing his own songs. In 1995, he released his first studio album titled "No Mercy", which fused hip hop, reggae, and dancehall rhythms, marking the beginning of a prolific career that would transform Latin music. Subsequently, he formed the duo "Los Cangris" alongside Nicky Jam, consolidating himself in the Puerto Rican music scene. The year 2004 was a historic turning point in his career and in global Latin music with the release of "Barrio Fino", an album that included the worldwide hit "Gasolina". This song not only popularized reggaeton globally but also positioned Daddy Yankee as a central figure in urban music and transformed how Latin music was consumed internationally. "Barrio Fino" sold more than eight million copies worldwide, consolidating his commercial success and establishing reggaeton as a genre with global reach. The song "Gasolina" became a generational anthem and a historic milestone in the global spread of reggaeton, opening doors for Latin artists in the international market. Throughout his career, Daddy Yankee has released several studio albums, including "El Cangri.com" (2002), "El Cartel: The Big Boss" (2007), "Mundial" (2010), "Prestige" (2012), "King Daddy" (2013), and "Legendaddy" (2022). His ability to improvise and compose lyrics that reflect social reality has earned him the title of "King of Improvisation". In 2017, he collaborated with Luis Fonsi on the hit "Despacito", a song that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a global phenomenon, being the first Spanish-language song to lead the Billboard Hot 100 since "Macarena" in 1996. The music video for "Despacito" was the most viewed on YouTube from August 2017 until November 2020, further consolidating his impact on global music. This collaboration reaffirmed his ability to adapt and remain relevant in the music industry, demonstrating that his influence transcended generations. In March 2022, Daddy Yankee announced his retirement from music after the release of his seventh album, "Legendaddy", and his farewell tour, "La Última Vuelta World Tour". However, in 2024, he returned with a new spiritual orientation, releasing songs like "Donante de Sangre" and "Loveo", reflecting his conversion to Christianity. In July 2025, he released "Sonríele", a Christian song that marked his official return to music. Subsequently, in October 2025, he presented his eighth studio album, "Lamento en Baile", the first in his new stage as a Christian artist. Beyond his music career, Daddy Yankee has ventured into film, starring in the movie "Talento de Barrio" in 2008, for which he also produced the soundtrack. Throughout his career, Daddy Yankee has sold over 30 million records and has been honored with multiple awards, including five Latin Grammy Awards and two Billboard Music Awards. In 2022, he was inducted into the Billboard Hall of Fame, recognizing his transformative impact on music. His influence and legacy in urban music continue to be a reference for new generations of artists, and he is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of reggaeton and Latin music in general. Daddy Yankee changed the course of music by being one of the main responsible parties for popularizing reggaeton globally, transforming how Latin urban music was consumed internationally and establishing the foundations for the massive success the genre would enjoy in subsequent decades.
