Numbers, home base and house quirks
Astronox is an independent electronic music and arts festival that turns a rural corner of Texas into a small temporary community devoted to sounds rarely placed at the centre of major American festivals. Its programme moves through bass music, psytrance, drum & bass, psydub, psybient, glitch, downtempo, techno, house and cinematic electronica, with a clear preference for artists who build complex sonic environments rather than relying only on immediate impact. Camping, stage design, sound, installations and visual art all function as parts of the same experience. With attendance deliberately capped at around one thousand people, Astronox places unusual emphasis on proximity between musicians, visual artists, production teams and the audience.
The project began in 2019 around DJ and promoter Nick Sumbles, known as Sick Numbles, who wanted to create a Texas gathering specifically for psychedelic and experimental electronic music that he felt received little representation in the region. After the inaugural event, the pandemic interrupted the sequence in 2020, and the second edition arrived in November 2021 near Dripping Springs. That four-day gathering already contained many of the characteristics that would define Astronox: dozens of hours of music, high-quality sound, live painters, fire performers, workshops and camping within a relatively small community. Rather than expanding immediately, the festival developed gradually and treated intimacy as part of the product.
The musical selection demonstrates that philosophy particularly well. Juno Reactor, Grouch, ATYYA, Somatoast, Mindex, Bluetech, KOAN Sound, Detox Unit, Ternion Sound, Yheti, Desert Dwellers, Ott, Eprom, Mr. Bill, Globular and kLL sMTH occupy very different positions within a broad electronic spectrum. Some performances move toward psytrance and psychedelic electronics, others focus on bass and glitch, while others unfold slowly through ambient, dub and downtempo. Astronox attempts to make these differences feel like chapters in the same narrative, devoting significant time to styles that larger commercial festivals often relegate to smaller stages or less visible time slots.
Visual art carries comparable importance. Dozens of artists paint live while projection mapping, VJs, sculptures, installations and cyberpunk-inspired stage design reshape the site after dark. Fire performers, aerialists, dancers, stilt walkers and other disciplines make moving around the festival more than a simple journey between campsite and dancefloor. Workshops cover creative, technical and wellbeing subjects, while video-game and tabletop tournaments, virtual-reality areas and an art gallery expand the programme further. Someone can therefore spend hours away from the main sound system without feeling disconnected from the festival's central creative environment.
Astronox has also developed a recognisable culture of participation. Camping and parking are integrated into the event, BYOB is permitted within stated rules, and Leave No Trace principles have even been reinforced through contests rewarding attendees for packing out their own rubbish. Limited capacity allows many participants to recognise one another from year to year and makes performers and production staff considerably more accessible than at mass-scale events. Valkyrie Ranch, a nature-focused property in Paige east of Austin, has strengthened that atmosphere as the home of recent editions, combining woodland, open land and enough isolation to support several continuous days of sound and activity.
The 2025 gathering brought another five days of international and American electronic artists into that framework and further established Valkyrie Ranch as the festival's contemporary home. Astronox 2026 is scheduled for October with another programme crossing experimental bass, downtempo, psychedelic music and drum & bass while retaining the roughly one-thousand-ticket limit. More than half a decade after its creation, Astronox continues to grow in a deliberately unusual direction: instead of pursuing tens of thousands of visitors, it invests in sound systems, increasingly international bookings and more ambitious visual production to deepen the experience for a relatively small community. That controlled scale is precisely what makes it feel closer to an extended artistic gathering than a conventional electronic festival.
