Hospitality in the Woods

Hospitality In The Woods understands something very basic about drum & bass: this music was built for speed, but also for family. Not family as a cute press-release phrase, but real rave-family energy: familiar faces from other dances, MCs lifting a whole tent with one line, DJs who know the history of the sound, people arriving in trainers ready to move all day and a community that can go from smooth liquid to neurofunk without feeling like it has changed planets. At Beckenham Place Park, that energy found a strange and perfect home: a London park with a lake, trees, a mansion, green paths and enough room for the bass to breathe.

The festival comes from the Hospitality universe, the events brand of Hospital Records, one of the central labels in British drum & bass. Hospital was founded in 1996, and over time it did not only build a catalogue; it built a way of understanding the scene. Hospitality became the live face of that culture, taking the label’s sound and its wider family into clubs, festivals and cities around the world. Hospitality In The Woods was not simply “another Hospital event.” It was a way of gathering that history in an open-air setting, with several stages and a clear purpose: to celebrate every corner of D&B in one day or one weekend.

The first major moment came in 2021 with Hospitality Weekend In The Woods, a two-day event at Beckenham Place Park during Hospital Records’ 25th anniversary year. That edition gathered a huge map of the scene: Hospitality, Let It Roll, Critical, Playaz, Soulvent, Rupture, Calibre Presents and other hosts taking over different spaces in the park. There was liquid, jungle, rollers, neurofunk, old school, new school, label classics and sets made for people who know the difference between hearing drum & bass and feeling it with the whole body. When that event won Best Festival at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards, it did not feel random. The scene recognized it as one of its own celebrations.

Later, the format returned in a more concentrated way as Hospitality In The Woods, with one-day editions in 2023 and 2024. That version has a particular strength: it does not spread itself too thin. You arrive at the park, step into the flow, pick a stage and know that for hours you will be inside one musical conversation, even if that conversation has many speeds. In 2024, with names such as Dillinja, Flava D, Kings of the Rollers, Ed Rush, LTJ Bukem, Fred V, Anaïs, Inja, Mungo’s Hi Fi and LENS + P Money, the festival again covered several generations and schools of drum & bass without turning the poster into a simple nostalgia exercise.

The real experience feels very London and beautifully unglamorous in the right way. It is not a Mediterranean postcard festival and not a hidden warehouse rave. It is a south London park taken over by bass, sound systems, food stalls, groups of friends, trees giving shade, grass that may end up punished and that odd combination of sunny afternoon and club intensity. You arrive in daylight, maybe through Beckenham Hill, walk toward the entrance, hear the bass before you see the stage and suddenly the park stops being just a park. It becomes D&B territory.

What makes Hospitality In The Woods different is its total focus. It does not try to be multigenre, it does not need pop, and it does not chase headliners from outside the scene. Its value lies in gathering the full spectrum of drum & bass and doing it somewhere with space to breathe. In the same day you can move from elegant liquid to classic jungle, from heavy rollers to neurofunk, from melodic vocals to MC-led pressure that pushes the energy right to the edge. It is not only speed; it is memory, technique, community and physical stamina.

Its current status needs careful handling. Hospitality remains active as a global brand, and Hospital Records is still an institution within the genre, but Hospitality In The Woods does not currently have an officially confirmed next edition. That does not erase its weight; it places it in pause or uncertain-future territory, with a short but very clear history. When it worked, it worked exactly as a big drum & bass gathering should: little unnecessary posing, big bass, well-shaped stages and the feeling that, for a few hours, a London woodland belonged to the ravers.
