Karnaval Festival

In Moergestel, Brabant, a carnival Saturday did not sound only of hoempa. On 25 February 2017, Karnaval Festival debuted outdoors with carnavalswagens and a hardstyle kick. Anyone who pictures Dutch carnival only as a village parade and hardstyle only as a summer compound has the wrong crossing: here the origin is a February Saturday, wagons and an ear that puts house and techno beside hoempa without asking either tradition for permission.

Hardstyle against hoempa is not a poster joke. It is the thesis. Hoempa is the pulse of the wagons and carnival bands; hardstyle is the kick Intents already knew how to programme on another calendar. The audience experience changes with the ground. In Moergestel you arrived in a village, you saw the carnavalswagens, you stood in February air — cold, possible mud, a low Brabant sky. At Brabanthallen you arrive in Den Bosch, you enter a covered site, you lose the horizon and gain volume. There is no summer campsite. There is carnival: costume, beer, a calendar that is not the field-festival calendar. You eat what the hall or the town offers. You sleep in a hotel or go home. The after is not on another island. It is in the same carnival season, or it ends because a hall closes too.

Intents Festival lends the team, not only a logo. That sentence matters. Karnaval Festival is not explained as a Saturday hobby. It is explained as a project of the same ear that already worked hardstyle at another scale, applied to February and to wagons. Remko Hermans is not turned into a founder myth here. He is named as part of that line. Nonprofit does not apply; a festival promoter deciding that Brabant carnival can sound like a kick does.

The contradiction is calendar and roof. A carnival festival wants street and wagon; a hardstyle festival wants PA and peak. Karnaval Festival occupies both desires and, when rain forces it, chooses the hall. That choice does not erase Moergestel. It leaves it as origin: six thousand, a Saturday, outdoors, wagons. Brabanthallen remains the lesson that Brabant wets and that the kick, if it wants to stay in February, sometimes goes inside. Anyone who knows both sites understands that the soul is neither village nor hall. It is the hoempa-hardstyle clash.

A long headliner list is not asserted here. The musical frame is: hardstyle, house, techno, an Intents ear laid over a Brabant ritual. The crowd can arrive from Tilburg or Den Bosch as naturally as from Moergestel. Costume is not merchandising. It is the February contract.
