About the festival

Rewind Festival is a British music festival brand dedicated to celebrating the greatest hits of the 1980s and other memorable decades of popular music. Established in 2009 in Henley-on-Thames, England, the event became an important destination for nostalgic entertainment through a programme featuring influential performers from pop, rock, soul, synth-pop and new wave. Its concept brings together concerts by recognised artists, themed parties, family activities, food areas and camping experiences in attractive outdoor locations. Visitors frequently embrace the atmosphere by wearing eighties-inspired clothing, fluorescent accessories, colourful wigs and elaborate costumes that have become central to the festival's visual identity. Unlike events focused primarily on new releases and emerging musical trends, Rewind celebrates familiar songs that have accompanied generations of listeners and retained their place in popular culture. Over time, the original gathering developed into a wider festival brand with regional editions and special events in different locations. Its identity is built around nostalgia, collective enjoyment and the ability of music to connect personal memories with shared experiences.

The history of Rewind Festival began from August 21 to 23, 2009, at Temple Island Meadows, a riverside location near Henley-on-Thames. Originally known as 80s Rewind Festival, the project followed the success of earlier nostalgia concerts and was developed with the involvement of The Rival Organisation and Into The Groove. Its inaugural line-up featured Kim Wilde, Rick Astley, Bananarama, Billy Ocean, Belinda Carlisle, Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge, ABC, Paul Young, Go West, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Heaven 17 and numerous other performers closely associated with the music of the 1980s. Bringing together artists from several different musical backgrounds created a weekend during which audiences could experience an extensive collection of familiar international hits. Additional attractions included fairground entertainment, street performances and comedy, extending the experience beyond the main concert stage. The enthusiastic public response demonstrated the appeal of a music festival built around shared nostalgia and encouraged its continuation as an annual event. Henley-on-Thames subsequently became the symbolic home of Rewind, maintaining a close relationship with the festival's history.

The growth of Rewind Festival led to the development of additional locations throughout the United Kingdom. In 2011, Rewind Scotland was introduced at Scone Palace near Perth, bringing the celebration of eighties music to audiences in Scotland. The inaugural Scottish edition featured performers including The Human League, Rick Astley, Kim Wilde, ABC, Billy Ocean, Howard Jones, Bananarama and Tony Hadley. A further expansion followed in 2014 with the launch of Rewind North at Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire. Its first programme included Billy Ocean, Mike & The Mechanics, Rick Astley, Jimmy Somerville, Marc Almond and other established performers. The brand consequently developed three principal regional gatherings known as South, Scotland and North, each operating with its own dates, venue and artist programme. Although the events were held in separate regions, they shared the Rewind identity, musical concept and principal official communication channels. This regional structure made nostalgic concerts accessible to audiences across a wider geographical area while preserving a recognisable atmosphere at every location. Each gathering also developed local traditions shaped by its venue and returning visitors.

The artistic programme of Rewind Festival features musicians who achieved particular popularity during the 1980s, although later editions have also included performers associated with subsequent decades. Concerts explore melodic pop, radio-friendly rock, synth-pop, new wave, soul and funk, combining original bands, established solo artists and musicians known for influential international hits. Across its history, the festival has presented Rick Astley, Kim Wilde, The Human League, Bananarama, Billy Ocean, ABC, Heaven 17, Tony Hadley, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Midge Ure, Marc Almond, Sister Sledge, Level 42, Bonnie Tyler, Holly Johnson and many others. Familiar songs are central to the event because they encourage thousands of visitors to sing together and revisit memorable periods of their lives. Additional stages, DJ performances, silent discos, karaoke and themed entertainment broaden the musical experience beyond the principal concerts. Fairground attractions, food stalls, family facilities and recreational spaces contribute to a festival atmosphere suitable for different generations. Music provides the foundation for a social celebration in which audience participation becomes as significant as the performances themselves.

At Henley-on-Thames, Temple Island Meadows provides the riverside landscape that has become inseparable from the identity of Rewind South. Its extensive grounds accommodate a large main stage, camping facilities, catering areas and entertainment spaces. Visitors can remain throughout the weekend, beginning with welcome activities and continuing through the principal Saturday and Sunday performances. The format appeals both to dedicated fans of particular musicians and to groups of friends or families seeking a shared nostalgic experience. The 2025 South programme featured Soft Cell, Holly Johnson, Midge Ure, ABC, Heaven 17, The Sugarhill Gang and many other performers. From August 21 to 23, 2026, the gathering welcomed The Human League, Kim Wilde, Soul II Soul, The Proclaimers, Tony Hadley, Nik Kershaw, Roland Gift and numerous additional artists. Following the temporary suspension of the Scotland and North editions, Henley retained its central position in the British calendar of the Rewind brand. Its return has been announced for August 20 to 22, 2027, while additional Rewind-branded experiences have continued to develop in other destinations and formats.

Rewind Festival holds a distinctive position among British nostalgia events because it transformed the popular music of the 1980s into a multiday cultural and social experience. Its development since 2009 illustrates how a riverside gathering in southern England became a broader festival brand with historic locations in both England and Scotland and later experiments with international events. Its importance lies in reconnecting established musicians with audiences of different generations and maintaining the presence of familiar songs within contemporary entertainment. South, Scotland and North represent regional chapters of one festival history, although their separate dates, venues and line-ups remain important for documenting individual editions. Temporary pauses in certain locations do not mean that the overall brand has disappeared, as the Henley gathering and other activities remain active. Rewind also demonstrates how costumes, recreational entertainment and collective celebrations can give nostalgic concerts a character extending beyond music alone. Thousands of visitors dressed in colourful eighties outfits, singing classic songs together beside the Thames, capture the spirit of an event dedicated to musical memories, celebration and shared experiences.
