Numbers, home base and house quirks
Sea Dance Festival is a beach dance-music festival in Budva, in Montenegro. EXIT puts it on. Dušan Kovačević directs it. The first one was from 15 to 17 July 2014, at Jaz Beach, three days tied to EXIT, which that summer was at Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad. About 80,000 people came through. At Dukley Gardens, the Be Human night brought Jamiroquai and Example. Entry was only with a gold or platinum pass, and the takings went to flood relief in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia. The municipality of Budva and EXIT gathered more than 140,000 euros and about 80,000 euros in goods. The Jaz bill also listed Underworld, Roger Sanchez and Juan Atkins.
From 15 to 18 July 2015 it was four days and six outdoor stages. The Prodigy, Rudimental and Róisín Murphy were at the top. There was camping about 50 metres from the beach, next to the main stage. The count was around 110,000 people, from more than 40 countries. In January 2015, in Groningen, it was named best medium-sized European festival. From 14 to 16 July 2016 it rained and the count fell to 75,000 over three days. At the top were Skrillex and Hurts. On Dance Paradise were Jeff Mills and Black Coffee.
From 13 to 15 July 2017, on Friday the 14th, Fatboy Slim played. Sean Paul, John Newman and Mahmut Orhan were also on. That year the No Sleep stage took the place of Dance Paradise, with Amelie Lens. The count was 65,000. From 30 August to 1 September 2018 the festival left Jaz for the first time and went to Buljarica Beach, still in Budva. At the top were Chic, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, Paul Kalkbrenner and Alice Merton. 47,000 people came through.
From 30 August to 1 September 2019 it was still at Buljarica. David Guetta, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin and Robin Schulz were at the top. The count was 63,000. The weekend of 28 to 30 August 2020 was set, with Martin Garrix on the bill, and it did not happen: it was moved to 2021. In 2021 the days were 26, 27 and 29 August, because the programme for the 28th moved to the next day on account of the weather. Boris Brejcha and Tale of Us closed that last day. 22,000 people came through. From 26 to 28 August 2022 the count went past 40,000. The bill listed Konstrakta, Senidah, Shouse and Mahmut Orhan.
In 2015, on Dance Paradise, the bill listed Bondax, Flight Facilities, Gramatik, Odesza and James Zabiela. In 2014 it also listed Bad Copy, Darkwood Dub, Klingande, Who See and Rambo Amadeus. In 2018, at Buljarica, it listed Bajaga i Instruktori, Hladno Pivo and Lost Frequencies. In 2019 the bill added Ofenbach, Helena Hauff and Senidah. In 2021 Meduza and Maceo Plex opened. In 2022 Dubioza Kolektiv was also on. In May 2023 the organisers said they were leaving Montenegro, over the blockades and the lack of support from the local government. From 17 to 19 August 2023 the festival was in Malinska, on the island of Krk, in Croatia. The bill listed Alok, Willy William and Fedde Le Grand. From 28 to 30 August 2026 it came back to Budva, to Bečići Beach. General entry was free with registration, and VIP was paid. There were three stages: the main one, Dance Paradise and Homeground. Friday's bill listed Hugel, Charlotte de Witte and Enrico Sangiuliano. On Saturday the 29th, near midnight, Dara sang Banagaranga. Then John Newman did Love Me Again, Feel the Love and Blame. Before that, Who See had been on with Bad Copy. On Dance Paradise, Marcel Dettmann and then BIIA. Sunday's bill listed Boris Brejcha.
