4848 Festival

4848 Festival starts from a simple and very smart idea: not every festival has to feel like a survival test. Instead of selling only camping, dust, lines and three days of heroic exhaustion, 4848 presents itself as a “festivacation”: half music festival, half mountain getaway. The name comes from Snowshoe Mountain Resort’s elevation, 4,848 feet above sea level, and that number is not decorative. It is the whole concept. This experience does not happen in just any field; it happens up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, where the landscape, the resort, the lake and the outdoor activities are part of the lineup.

The festival began in 2019 under All Good Presents, a promoter with deep roots in the jam, roots and community-festival world. From the start, 4848 wanted to set itself apart from the standard campout festival. It did not reject festival culture — the long sets, the friends, the walks between stages, the craft beer, the crowd that travels for music — but it added another layer: resort lodging, a village atmosphere, scenic lifts, pools, a lake, kayaks, hiking trails and the possibility of seeing a set and then getting into the water or riding a lift over the mountain. That combination gave it a clear identity from its first edition.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort does a lot of the storytelling. In winter, it is a ski destination; in summer, it becomes green mountain, bike park, trails, lake, terraces, balconies, village and cooler air than many July festivals can offer. That changes the way the weekend feels. You arrive with a festival mindset, but also with the sense of being on vacation. You can book lodging, move around the resort, head down to Shavers Lake, walk between stages at the top of the mountain and feel that not everything is designed to wear you down. 4848 does not remove festival fatigue, of course, but it wraps it in something more comfortable and more scenic.

Musically, the festival lives in the world of jam bands, bluegrass, Americana, funk, soul, roots rock, psych-rock and that useful but wide American category: genre-busting. It is not a pop festival or an EDM festival, and it is not pure traditional bluegrass either. Its audience comes for long jams, improvising musicians, bands that can stretch songs, afternoon grooves, string harmonies and sets that work best when they are not rushed. The 2026 edition makes that clear with Greensky Bluegrass, The Revivalists, STS9, The Infamous Stringdusters, Moon Taxi, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, Lotus, Big Something, Grateful Shred, Elephant Revival, Polyrhythmics and Kanika Moore & Brown Eyed Bois.

The real experience has a mountain rhythm. You start the day deciding whether to go straight to the first set or spend time by the lake. Maybe someone in your group wants a paddle boat, someone else wants a hammock, and someone has already gone looking for the best spot in front of the stage. By afternoon, the festival becomes a community: band shirts, caps, families, bluegrass fans, jam-heads, people who know exactly which solo they are waiting for and others who simply came to let the music and the landscape carry them. When the sun drops, the mountain changes. The air cools down, the stages light up and the vacation part starts to merge with a long festival night.

What makes 4848 Festival different is that it does not try to compete with mega-festivals or rougher campouts. Its bet is something else: making music feel like part of a stay. It is not only about arriving, seeing bands and surviving; it is about inhabiting a place for three days. At its best, 4848 feels like a gathering of friends on top of a mountain, with enough comfort to avoid unnecessary suffering and enough music to remind you that a good jam, at 4,848 feet, can make summer feel a whole lot lighter.
