La Prima Estate

Lido di Camaiore is not a Napa compound. It is Versilia, fifty metres from the sea, the Tyrrhenian on one side and the Alpi Apuane on the other, and a park called BussolaDomani. Anyone arriving in search of La Onda — Expo, Latin, a BottleRock sister — has the wrong coast. Here the ear is pop, indie and rock, and the format of that first run was not a fairground weekend: it was 21 to 26 June 2022, six nights, four artists an evening, concerts from half past six. Coverage presented it with a phrase that does not ask for a slogan: more than a festival, a holiday.

BussolaDomani is not an improvised field. It is a park with a music history in the heart of Versilia, a grass oasis a step from the beach clubs. The team that also holds Lucca Summer Festival — coverage attributes the presentation to D’Alessandro e Galli — brought to Lido an ear for international pop and indie that does not apologise for mixing The National with Duran Duran. Tuesday opened with The National, an Italian date of that tour. Courtney Barnett and Giorgio Poi were the same night. Thursday, Duran Duran and Bluvertigo. The organiser, as a single entity, is not stamped here. The site is: the park, the sea, six nights.

The experience follows the format. You arrive in Lido, you look for the park, you leave the hotel a few hundred metres away. There is no camping as contract. The contract is the holiday: beach by day, stage by late afternoon, after at Bussola Versilia when coverage remembers La Prima Estate OFF, talks on the Santeria Belmare terrace. Anyone coming from Florence or Pisa does not find a capital’s peri-urban compound. They find a coast town that for a week sounds like indie at seven and pop at eleven. The sea is not décor. It is the distance: fifty metres.

La Prima Estate is not La Onda. That correction is not an archive footnote. La Onda is Napa, Latin, a fairground Expo. La Prima Estate is Tuscany, a park by the sea, pop and indie lived as a coast week. Mixing them is the error of anyone who only reads La and assumes one map. A reader who enters through Lido di Camaiore deserves the right name: a first summer of Versilia, not a valley wave.

There is no need to invent a list of twenty nights to explain the place. The place is explained by the park, by The National on a Tuesday, by Anderson .Paak on a Friday, by Jamie xx and Cosmo on a Saturday, by Kaytranada and Jungle on the closing Sunday. Pop, indie and rock fit that same week without any night asking to be the only thesis. Anyone who treats the gathering as a lesser Lucca Summer has the wrong dignity. Six Lido nights deserve the same prose as a walled compound. The sea lends the breeze; BussolaDomani lends the grass.

There is a useful contradiction: the festival sells itself as a relaxed holiday and, at the same time, books names that would fill a city square. It does not apologise for the scale. It explains why that scale fits a park fifty metres from the Tyrrhenian. Four artists a night is not a brochure gesture. It is the thesis of a week that does not want to be a twelve-hour compound. Anyone working the site is not only tour staff. It is a coast town that already knew how to receive summer guests and learned to receive a festival ear.

By day Lido is still Lido: an umbrella, a promenade, a hotel two streets away. By night indie asks for a close ear and pop asks for a chorus. There is no capital after that turns Camaiore into a metropolis. The after is the club next door, or the terrace, or the same walk back to the hotel. June heat in Versilia is not a metaphor. It is the body of the format: you sweat on the grass and you enter the sea the next day.

Anyone who crosses BussolaDomani at dusk understands why this Prima Estate is not a California Expo. You walk little and you hear the sea. The park still smells of coast pine; the stage asks for another night; the hotel waits three hundred metres away. Between 21 June 2022 and a holiday claim, between The National and Duran Duran, between the Tyrrhenian and the Apuane, Versilia had a festival that will not translate as a La Onda branch. The Lido lends the summer’s name. What remains is a park that learned to be a week without ceasing to be a beach.
