Lago Lago

Stroombroek is not Amsterdam. It is a leisure lake in Braamt, in Gelderland’s Achterhoek, a Leisurelands site with camping, an inland beach and the quiet of Montferland when no speaker is on. Lago Lago sat there from 1 to 3 July 2022 as if Dutch house and techno needed a sheet of water far from the Randstad. Chasing the Hihat, with Daniel van Drunen and Rob Simon, did not hire a fair hall. They hired a plas and said the name was already the programme: lake, lake, and an ear between house and techno.

Before the first set, the organiser and Leisurelands had signed three years. Van Drunen put it without dossier poetry: at a multi-day festival you do not enter for a single season if you want a bond with the ground and the neighbours. The first dreamed figure — about eighty-five hundred a day — came down to about four thousand. It was not a failure in costume. It was a site decision: less plot, more intimacy, the focus on the water and not on a second field a few hundred metres off. Simon, in local reports, spoke of four thousand with first-year relief: there was no comparison, and the number was enough.

The bill of that first weekend was not a list to fill a post. It was an ear’s thesis. Joris Voorn, Todd Terje, Henrik Schwarz, John Digweed, Gui Boratto, Extrawelt: house, techno, disco for a long night. Fifty-one acts, several stages, a main stage coverage remembers as licensed until four in the morning. Sixteen hours of arc a day, they said, need a story that does not jump from peak to peak. The age floor — twenty-one — is not a bar footnote. It is a door. Anyone looking for an eighteen-plus rave in a hall has the wrong lake.

The audience experience is camping by the water, not a canal club. You drive from the Randstad or drop into the Achterhoek with the sense of having left the city. The tent was in the ticket; glamping and Landal Stroombroek cost more. In the morning, reports remember people taking a board onto the lake. At night the same site stops being a recreation park and becomes a floor. The weather can be Gelderland weather: July sun or a shower. If mud comes, it is camping mud, not a business-park car park.

Neighbours were not a backdrop. Van Drunen gave a Wednesday tour: about sixty people from the area, a number he said he had never seen. The fact measures the contract. A house festival on a municipal leisure lake does not hold if it only convinces those who come from Amsterdam. It holds if Braamt accepts noise until four and if Leisurelands sees more than a weekend. Many ears came from the Randstad. Others were locals who wanted to try something new on their own plas.

This is not Lakefest and not Lakelive. Lakefest is a family pop-and-rock gathering in the west of England, born at a cider waterpark and later moved to a castle. Lakelive is a nine-day festival in Biel and Nidau, on Lake Biel, with Swiss sport and culture. Confusing the three because the name carries “lago” or “lake” is a map error. Lago Lago does not ask for a castle or an expo. It asks for a leisure lake in the Achterhoek and a club ear willing to travel.

There is no need to invent a second edition to explain the place. The place is explained by the plas, by the cut in capacity, by camping in the ticket and by a team that came from the city to borrow Montferland’s quiet. Lago Lago is best understood as a sheet of water that refused to stay in the leisure leaflet. Between Chasing the Hihat and Leisurelands, between Voorn and Digweed, between the four thousand and four in the morning, Dutch house and techno have a Braamt that did not ask the Randstad for permission. The lake lends the reflection; Van Drunen and Simon lent the stubbornness of lowering the figure so as not to lose the site.

Anyone looking for an English Lakefest or a Swiss Lakelive at Stroombroek has the wrong border. Here the water is Gelderland, the name is said twice, and the first July weekend of 2022 remains the origin. Lago Lago is not a branded open air with another lake. It is a house and techno festival that learned, at the outset, that intimacy is also a way of programming.
