Live at Leeds

Live at Leeds is an indie, rock and pop festival. The first edition ran in 2007, in rooms across central Leeds, England. Leeds City Council and Futuresound put it on to mark the city’s eight-hundredth year. It is not The Who’s Live at Leeds album, recorded on 14 February 1970 at the University of Leeds Refectory. It is not Leeds Festival at Bramham Park, the August date tied to Reading. It is the venue crawl, and later the park day, that Futuresound planted in May.

That first year held about fifty bands, film screenings and an industry seminar. Lists remember Wild Beasts, Slow Club and Grammatics. There was no campsite. There was a wristband and a map of pubs, academies and clubs. In 2008 the May Day bank-holiday weekend sat The Pigeon Detectives twice in Millennium Square. The city centre was the site. You walked from door to door. You missed a set if the other one started on the same minute.

The rooms explain the character. Brudenell Social Club, in Hyde Park, is a social club with two spaces. O2 Academy Leeds holds thousands. The Cockpit was, while it lasted, a rock cellar. Belgrave Music Hall, Headrow House, The Key Club and even a church — Holy Trinity in 2017 write-ups — sit on the same wristband. You leave the train at Leeds. You walk. You queue on one street and hear another bass two blocks away. Indie and pop that day do not ask for a field. They ask for shoes and a plan.

The bill worked as a springboard. Marina and the Diamonds, Mumford and Sons and Bombay Bicycle Club came through in 2009. Ed Sheeran, Everything Everything and Lightspeed Champion in 2010. James Blake, Anna Calvi, The Futureheads and Frightened Rabbit in 2011. Example, Marina again and The Subways in 2012. Later reports place Stormzy and Royal Blood among those who played before stadiums. The names are not a trophy list. They mark a city that heard the next record in a club, not on a cover.

In 2021 the venue edition moved to October because of the pandemic. Circa Waves, Sports Team, The Big Moon and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes filled that return. Futuresound, with Colin Oliver as managing director, already ran Slam Dunk. Joe Hubbard, from the team, later said the May gap could hold something else. In 2022 Live at Leeds: In The Park began, on 4 June, at Temple Newsam. Bombay Bicycle Club and The Vaccines closed. Arlo Parks, Sea Girls, Sports Team, The Pigeon Detectives and Confidence Man filled the day. That year’s In the City date moved to 15 October.

Temple Newsam is not Bramham Park. It is an estate east of Leeds, with a stately house and lawns. Leeds Festival sat there before it moved. Slam Dunk already used the ground. The Live at Leeds park opens around midday, with an 23:00 curfew and shuttles from Sovereign Street. You reach Leeds station and take a bus or the M1. You do not sleep in a multi-day official campsite. You go back to the city. Field and rooms are two formats of one brand, not two unrelated festivals.

The venue day is a city walk. You buy one day. You mark Brudenell at four and the Academy at nine. Clashes are part of the deal: 2017 write-ups remember Frightened Rabbit against Wild Beasts. You run. You choose. You miss. In the church folk fits the pews. In the cellar rock pushes. At night the centre fills with wristbands hunting the last door. Rain is common. The umbrella works between rooms. Inside it does not.

There is no need to mix the title with The Who. The 1970 album is a hard-rock record from a university dining hall. The 2007 festival is a map of rooms and, from 2022, a park day. Leeds Festival, in August, is another company and another site. If a poster says Live at Leeds and shows Townshend in 1970, that is not this one. This one has Futuresound, the city’s 800th year and Temple Newsam as an expansion, not as the start.

Live at Leeds reads as the festival the council and Futuresound began in 2007 so indie, rock and pop would sound in the centre, and that later opened a park day at Temple Newsam. The Pigeon Detectives, Marina, Ed Sheeran, James Blake, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Vaccines hold stages. The ground is a club or a lawn, not the 1970 Refectory. The city sits in the middle. What remains on the page is a May — and a park June — that you walk, not a Who album.
