Magic Festival

Magic Festival is the electronic festival tied to Groenlo, in the Dutch Achterhoek. District East Events, a promoter from that town, runs it. The first outdoor day under this name was 26 August 2017 at the Engelse Schans in Lichtenvoorde, an old fort among trees. Hardstyle, hardcore and techno shared the ground, under the theme Nature Industries. In 2016 the same company had already tried a club night at City Lido in Groenlo, with separate rooms. The daytime festival is not that theatre night. It is the date that puts the low end outdoors or inside a historic building in town.

What sets it apart from a coastal field festival is the scale and the map. Groenlo is not Amsterdam. People arrive by car on regional roads, and the site fits a short walk. District East splits the electronics into zones: one for hardstyle, one for house or techno, sometimes a cellar for deeper techno. At the 2016 night the City Theater carried hardstyle, another room carried house and the cellar carried techno. At the 2017 Schans the day ran from one in the afternoon until one at night, with faster names such as Phuture Noize, B-Front, Frequencerz and Delete on the hard side, and techno on the other, T. Raumschmiere among those announced. The clock does not need rebuilding. The arc is enough: two dance families on one site, and the crowd changing zone without changing town.

For several years the indoor home was the Oude Calixtuskerk, Groenlo’s old church on Mattelierstraat. From 2020 Magic Festival put Church of Techno there. The first two nights sold out. In 2022 they added Magic Foute Party, an evening of nineties and two-thousands dance, techno, trance, rave and Dutch-language hits, with drag queens on the stage. The last night inside the church was 6 May 2023. The Darkraver, Beatcrooks and other party booths were on the bill. The church was about to become Museum 1627 and would no longer host shows. The team said Church of Techno would continue outdoors in front of the building and that the town carnival would move into a tent. Those were other dates from the same company, not the big Schans day.

Walking into the church was another scale. High roof, stone, a stage where hardstyle or the hits bounced in the nave. Drinks ran on tokens, as District East’s conditions set out. Parking and the approach path count as part of the grounds in those rules. By day, when the date was the Schans, the fort hidden in the woods gave grass and trees instead of wooden pews. By night, in the church, the costume and the Foute Party décor shared the room with the lights. Anyone from farther away slept in the Achterhoek, not in a tent at the fort: no campsite is on record as a fixed part of the format. Groenlo fits an afternoon’s drive from the cities of the eastern Netherlands. Anyone who arrived early saw the tower before the stage. Inside, the cloakroom and the token bar set the pace as much as the booth: no token, no glass, and the token did not work beyond the fence. At the Schans, woodland mud replaced stone, and a light jacket was enough after dark even if a T-shirt had been plenty at mid-afternoon. District East says, in its own account, that it builds concepts with a theme and décor, not an empty floor and a single name. That décor — a forest at night, a church nave, a “foute” party — was the other stage, the one that does not play a record.

In December 2024 they announced a return on 31 May 2025 at Scholtenbrugpark in Winterswijk, from two in the afternoon until midnight, with two areas. That news page also says the 2025 date did not happen. The homepage, with no year on the notice, says the festival is not going ahead at the site they were using because they cannot guarantee the quality, offers a refund to anyone who already held a ticket, and speaks of a pause, not a final ending. There was no Saturday in Winterswijk in 2025 to describe as a lived format. What did happen sits in Groenlo and Lichtenvoorde: the church through May 2023, and the outdoor day that opened the name in 2017.

When the last night inside the Oude Calixtus went dark, the nave was left for the museum works. Outside, Groenlo is still an Achterhoek town, with the church tower and short streets toward the car park. Magic Festival fitted that path: from City Lido to the Schans among trees, and from the church stone to a pause announced on its own site. Hardstyle and techno shared a home while the building still took shows. Museum 1627 kept the nave. The festival, on the homepage, is waiting on another site.
