Milkshake Festival

Milkshake Festival is an outdoor dance weekend in Amsterdam’s Westerpark, on the Westergas grounds. The house page calls it an open-minded electronic festival, for all who love, and places it in the city centre since 2012. Dress, it says, does not measure status, gender or sexuality. The genres that page puts first are house, disco, pop, techno, R&B and dancehall. A different promoter runs each stage. Drag, voguing and performance sit beside the booth. The site on the file is the house site and it stays.

The first day Paradiso announces is Sunday 22 July 2012, a single afternoon into night. Club AIR and the Paradiso hall build it. The concept belongs to Peter van Vught, of Paradiso, and Marieke Samallo, of AIR. The Dutch encyclopedia adds that Erwin Olaf signs the image, that Ted Langenbach, of Now&Wow, programmes a stage, and that Samallo becomes director. The opening motto takes a line from a Blur song about who loves whom. Another house line, in English, is for all who love. In 2012 it fits on one Sunday. AT5, closing July 2024, says it is already several days and calls that one the eleventh. The 2025 page on the site calls the 26 and 27 July weekend the thirteenth, with nine stages. A trade note on 17 April 2026 calls two July days the fifteenth. If 2012 is the first and no summer is missing, 2024 would be the thirteenth. Eleven, thirteen and fifteen do not measure the same calendar.

The ground these visits walk is the park, not a field outside the city. Partyflock puts the 2024 clock from 12:00 to 23:00 and the gate on Haarlemmerweg. One event card splits the postcode of Haarlemmerweg 4 between 1013 RW and 1014 BE. A club that says it hosts three areas prints Klönneplein 4-6, 1014 DD, and its own clock from 13:00 to 23:00. That phone number is the club’s. Dazed, on 26 August 2024, describes the Supertoys stage crowned by a carousel and a life-sized pink castle where drag queens hold the floor. The About page speaks of eleven stages a day in earlier years. The 2025 card speaks of nine. The Gashouder is the large indoor hall on the same grounds. A ticket sheet prints 18 plus.

The Sunday AT5 walks is 28 July 2024. Jimmy Miltenburg files at 18:18. The year before, he writes, it rained. That close is only sun. The festival had already started on Friday evening. A dressed-up visitor says they are there with friends and that they swap jeans and a T-shirt for something else. Another says nobody stares and the music is good. An older woman adds that, as a grandmother, she does not feel out of place. Dazed publishes on 26 August the photographs of Szymon Stepniak from that same opening of Pride. He arrives on an early train, short of sleep, and two drag queens greet him. He tells of a round of kisses repeated for the camera, and of people of different ages on the same lawn. On the Partyflock card for that weekend, a visitor complains of 3.25 euros for an ice lolly and 9.90 euros for a small 250-millilitre can. The queue they do see is the water tap by the toilets. Fifteen votes on that card return a very good mark. A travel piece calls its visit the fourth and says more than 15,000 tickets were gone before the day. At that gate, a drag queen hands over a poncho. Those are two different rains.

Trouw walks the park with Toby van Laar, who is 1.11 metres tall. He finds low bars after searching, plates for wheelchairs, a raised deck and wide toilets. HandicapNL, about three years into festival work, puts a low-stimulus room beside the main stage, with a bed, a lift and a fridge for medicine. The About page says that each year more than a thousand visitors with disabilities, and the people who care for them, come in with the For All Who Love foundation. That figure is the house’s. A paper filed before the gates of July 2025 tells another story: a headliner is dropped after remarks about the community, about thirty artists boycott over the KKR fund inside the parent company Superstruct, and more than 1,600 tickets show up for resale, many under half price. The organisation adds other names in a hurry. That text sits before the weekend, not on a walked Sunday. On 17 April 2026 a trade note prints 25 and 26 July as the fifteenth and as the close of Samallo’s time as creative director, with several drag and club names on the sheet. These visits do not enter those two days. The homepage, afterward, asks for a pre-register for a later summer.

Sleep is in the city. Stepniak arrives by train. These pages do not describe a camp. The pool is not the stage: the lawn, the castle and the Gashouder are. In 2017 and 2018 the house says it co-produced the name in São Paulo. When it wants, it takes the party indoors, at Ahoy in Rotterdam or at Amaze during Amsterdam Dance Event. Those rooms are not the park weekend. The shape left standing is late July at Westergas, with the sunny Sunday of 2024 as the day these papers close.
