Open Beatz Festival

At Open Beatz Festival, electronic music leaves the club environment for several days and takes over fields, woodland and broad stretches of open countryside. The atmosphere changes markedly as the day progresses. In the afternoon, the landscape is still highly visible, groups relax between performances and people move freely between different areas. After dark, illuminated structures, screens and heavy low frequencies begin to dominate the surroundings until the site resembles a temporary electronic city. That contrast between nature and large-scale production has become one of the festival’s most recognisable qualities.

Open Beatz began in 2009 as a relatively small open-air gathering rooted in the regional electronic scene. Its early editions were far removed from the scale the event would eventually reach, but the basic idea was already present: bringing several forms of dance music together within a summer festival. A significant change came in 2013, when the event moved to the surroundings in which its major expansion would take place. From there, audiences, production, musical range and the importance of camping all increased, turning Open Beatz into one of southern Germany’s major electronic music gatherings.

One of the qualities that separates it from a festival devoted almost entirely to commercial EDM is the range of electronic communities represented within the same event. House and mainstage-oriented sounds remain highly visible, but walking through the grounds can lead to techno, hardtechno, hardstyle, hardcore, trance, drum & bass, Goa, psytrance and other variations. Different areas develop distinct personalities, so moving from one stage to another can feel almost like crossing between separate festivals. The music changes, but so do the crowd behaviour, visual language and intensity of the dancefloor.

That diversity makes a day at Open Beatz an exercise in exploration. Some visitors arrive with precise timetables and carefully planned routes, determined to follow particular styles or sets. Others simply walk until something catches their attention. Remaining at one area for the entire day is certainly possible, but doing so means missing much of what defines the event. Open Beatz rewards movement: leaving a house-oriented environment and finding yourself minutes later surrounded by hardstyle or techno is a completely ordinary part of the weekend.

Camping extends that experience far beyond the official performance hours. For a significant portion of the audience, the festival begins when the tent goes up and does not properly end until camp is dismantled. Temporary neighbourhoods develop their own social rhythms as returning groups, new neighbours and strangers share space for several days. Food, drinks, conversations and music continue away from the main stages, giving the event a communal dimension that a single-day dance festival could never reproduce. Sleep remains necessary, although it rarely seems to dominate anyone’s plans.

Production has expanded alongside the festival. The largest stages rely on substantial structures, video, lighting, effects and dedicated opening or closing moments, while areas associated with more specific electronic scenes establish their own environments. Some aim for spectacle on a monumental scale; others work precisely because they feel closer to a club or rave. This contrast prevents the festival from becoming the same visual idea repeated several times. Each area attempts to reflect something of the music and audience it serves.

Despite the scale, the natural setting continues to shape the event. The festival takes place on land surrounded by meadows and woodland that return to agricultural and rural use outside the event period, making the temporary nature of the entire construction especially visible. Paths, grass, dust or mud depending on the weather, trees and open distances remain part of the experience. For a few days, production infrastructure creates something resembling a small city; soon afterwards, almost all of it disappears.

From its beginnings as a modest open air in 2009, Open Beatz has grown without forcing electronic music into a single definition. Its strongest characteristic is precisely its ability to place different club cultures within the same weekend while allowing them to retain their individual identities. After sunset, lights emerge across the dark countryside and every stage develops a separate pulse. Several rhythms may overlap in the distance, but approaching any one area brings a distinct world into focus. That collection of electronic environments temporarily constructed in nature is ultimately what makes Open Beatz recognisable.
