POST. Festival

Post. Festival does not begin with a vast field or a rush towards a distant main stage. It begins in Fountain Square, among brick buildings, restaurants, bars, record shops and streets that continue to belong to everyday Indianapolis. The audience arrives at HI-FI, moves towards the neighbouring HI-FI Annex and spends three days passing between two closely connected stages. Outside, there may still be daylight and July heat; indoors, the room is dark, amplifiers are waiting and a low murmur gives way to silence as the first sustained note begins to grow.

Derek Vorndran and Nason Frizzell founded the festival in 2018 after discussing for years whether the American Midwest could support a gathering devoted to post-rock and its surrounding scenes. European events such as dunk!festival and ArcTanGent had demonstrated that this music could sustain its own community, while comparable opportunities in the United States remained rare. The inaugural weekend took place at Indiana City Brewing Co., a brewery with room for roughly 250 people. It was deliberately intimate, built around a limited budget and a straightforward aim: place bands and listeners who usually encountered one another online or on scattered tours inside the same room.

The Appleseed Cast, This Patch of Sky, Outrun the Sunlight, Heron and a strong group of Midwestern artists shaped that first chapter. The organisers were not attempting to reproduce a mainstream festival in miniature. The appeal lay in complete performances, close contact and a sense that the people onstage, behind the event and in the audience were contributing to the same culture. It felt closer to a reunion of record collectors, touring musicians, independent labels and long-distance friends than to an industry showcase arranged around celebrity.

Post. Festival moved to the Irving Theater in 2019. Plans for 2020 and 2021 disappeared during the pandemic, but the gathering returned at The Vogue in 2022 with Boris, Pelican, Nothing and Pianos Become the Teeth among the leading names. A further change came in 2023, when the festival settled at HI-FI and HI-FI Annex in Fountain Square. The pairing of an indoor room and an adjacent outdoor venue allowed the event to expand while retaining a compact shape. There are no exhausting journeys across a giant site, and the timetable is designed to let audiences experience more than brief fragments of competing sets.

That approach suits music built around patience. A performance may begin with a small electronic pulse, a clean guitar figure or several seconds of near silence. The repetition gradually changes, drums enter and a piece that appeared weightless can become physically overwhelming. An instrumental group may travel from restraint to distortion without explaining the destination in words. A post-metal band can slow everything down until each strike lands with unusual force. Leaving after twenty minutes often means missing the reason the preceding twenty existed, so the festival encourages listeners to remain inside the full arc of a set.

The word “post” is treated as an opening rather than a strict category. Post-rock, post-metal and post-hardcore form the core, but shoegaze, doom, sludge, screamo, emo, experimental punk and electronic textures move through the same programme. Some bands create long cinematic compositions without vocals. Others rely on screamed voices, abrupt changes and the physical intensity of hardcore. A delicate performance can be followed by something chaotic; a wall of guitars can give way to minimal loops or a melody that barely rises above the room.

The audience is central to the festival’s character. Most attendees travel to Indianapolis from elsewhere, turning the weekend into a yearly pilgrimage for a specialised international scene. Fountain Square fills with obscure band shirts and conversations about albums, pedals, labels and sets witnessed several years earlier. Performers frequently remain nearby after playing, watching other artists, visiting merchandise tables or talking with listeners. The usual barrier between artist and audience becomes thinner, and recommendations travel quickly. Someone arriving for a recognised name may leave most excited by a band discovered early in the afternoon.

The 2026 edition runs from 23 to 25 July. LSD and the Search for God, Caspian, Kylesa, The Album Leaf, The Armed, El Ten Eleven, Torche, Austin TV, Rolo Tomassi, The Appleseed Cast, Moving Mountains, Les Savy Fav, Junius, Lowercase Noises and So Hideous represent several generations of music existing beyond conventional rock boundaries. Instrumental post-rock, shoegaze, post-hardcore, experimental metal and emotionally charged indie music are not divided into isolated zones; they become different parts of the same weekend.

Post. Festival has grown far beyond the 250-person brewery where it began, yet its identity still depends on collective attention. It does not require a remote landscape or an enormous temporary city. Its world appears inside two neighbouring venues, when a crowded room becomes completely quiet for an almost inaudible opening and then, several minutes later, absorbs the same enormous crescendo together.
