It was the kind of lineup where someone could arrive looking for Robert Smith’s emotional darkness, end up singing a huge Killers chorus, dance through the synthetic glow of Pet Shop Boys, and reconnect with the version-shifting Beck who always seems to change shape without losing himself.

The São Paulo setting also gave the festival a different texture. Interlagos is not only a familiar name for Formula 1 fans; as a festival site, it brings scale, a feeling of a city within the city, and the energy of a major event. In that context, Primavera Sound São Paulo had something of a mass gathering, but also something of an exploration. Because Primavera’s charm is never only in the big names, but in what happens when you step away from the plan: when you walk toward another stage on instinct, when you hear something you had not marked in advance, when you realize that the concert you remember most was not necessarily the one you were waiting for.
