Austin Psych Fest

Austin Psych Fest is one of the festivals that best understands psychedelia not only as a genre, but as a way of listening. Founded in Austin in 2008, it began as a gathering of bands, visuals, fuzzed-out guitars, liquid lights and an audience willing to get a little lost inside the sound. Over time, its story became intertwined with LEVITATION, The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels, turning it into a central piece of the modern psychedelic map.

Its origin feels very Austin: it did not start as a mass-market product, but as the natural extension of a scene. Bands, visual artists, labels, poster designers, garage fans, shoegaze listeners, drone heads, acid rock devotees, psych-pop explorers and experimental music people found in Austin Psych Fest a place where that music could have its own weekend. It did not need to be disguised as generic indie or pushed toward the mainstream. Here, reverb, delay, hypnotic basslines, circular drums and projections were part of the main language.

The first era built an important mythology. Austin Psych Fest moved through venues such as The Red Barn, The Radio Room, The Mohawk, Seaholm Power Plant, Emo’s and Carson Creek Ranch, growing from a one-day event into an international reference point. In 2015, the project publicly became LEVITATION, a name drawn from the world of The 13th Floor Elevators, one of the essential bands in Texas psychedelia. That change expanded its reach, but the name Austin Psych Fest kept a very specific emotional charge: the original idea, rougher, more communal, more directly tied to the psychedelic DNA of the city.

That is why its return in 2023 made sense. Austin Psych Fest came back in its springtime, outdoor, single-venue format, with two stages and a more intimate scale. The Far Out Lounge in South Austin gave it the ideal home: a big backyard, trees, Texas sky, a relaxed atmosphere and enough space for bands to breathe without losing closeness. It is not a cold mega-structure; it is a place that lets the festival feel like a local party amplified. Among the trees, liquid lights and South Austin dust, the name recovered some of its original spirit.

The current programming keeps a beautiful tension between memory and discovery. Austin Psych Fest can host The Flaming Lips, The Black Angels, DIIV, Ty Segall, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Boogarins, Holy Wave, Night Beats, LA LOM, Money Chicha and Thee Sacred Souls without feeling forced. All of those names connect to psychedelia in different ways: some through expansive rock, others through shoegaze, cumbia, soul, garage, French psych-pop, Brazilian scenes or Californian fuzz. The festival does not trap psychedelia inside one decade or one guitar pedal; it treats it as a current that keeps mutating.

The 2026 edition shows that breadth clearly. The Flaming Lips bring the colourful, cosmic and theatrical side; The Black Angels represent the darker Texan root of the festival; Thee Sacred Souls take psychedelic soul into a warmer and more elegant space; DIIV and Glare connect with shoegaze and nu-gaze; Boogarins and Al-Qasar open international routes; LA LOM, Money Chicha and Como Las Movies bring Latin psychedelia and Texas cumbia closer; Ty Segall and Night Beats keep the garage line burning. That combination does not simply book artists. It maps what psychedelia sounds like when it stops staring at itself and opens outward.

A key part of Austin Psych Fest is visual. Liquid light, posters, sleeve art, videos and the LEVITATION aesthetic are not secondary decoration. They act as an extension of the sound. Watching a band at this festival is not only about hearing songs; it is about entering a moving image, a texture. Psychedelia needs that crossing of audio and vision, and Austin Psych Fest has understood that from the beginning.

Austin Psych Fest should be listed as an active and reference-level festival within contemporary psychedelia, with a clear note on its relationship with LEVITATION. Its importance lies not only in its lineup, but in the community of aesthetics it has built: noisy bands, liquid lights, vinyl, posters, international scenes and a city that knows live music can also be a trance state.
