About the festival

Azkena Rock Festival is one of Spain’s great homes for rock, but not in the cold sense of a “major event.” Its strength lies in something more stubborn and more emotional: the feeling that every June, Vitoria-Gasteiz becomes a meeting point for people who still believe a guitar can put the world in order for a few hours. Whether the lineup leans toward punk, garage, blues, southern rock, soul, hard rock, rockabilly or alternative country, everything at Azkena seems to begin from the same idea: rock is not a museum piece, but a way of gathering, arguing, sweating, remembering and discovering.

The story began in 2002 at Azkena Gasteiz, with a first edition that was small compared with what would come later, but already full of attitude. Backyard Babies, Supersuckers, Mudhoney, The Bellrays, Diamond Dogs, Sex Museum and other names shaped an opening chapter that had no interest in sounding polite. From there, the festival grew until it settled into Mendizabala, a site that became ARF’s natural territory. That move was decisive: the festival shifted from the intensity of a club to an open, multi-day experience with camping, stages, long nights and a loyal rock congregation returning year after year.

Mendizabala does not have the glamour of a postcard destination, and that is exactly why it works. It is practical, direct and recognizable. You arrive in Vitoria-Gasteiz, feel the city knows what is happening, spot band shirts in bars, squares and streets, and end up in a venue where the experience is lived without much posing. Azkena does not need to sell a luxury fantasy. It sells sound, friendship, beer, jackets, boots, debates about the best show of the day and that mix of exhaustion and happiness that only appears after you have watched too many bands in a row and still want one more.

One of its greatest strengths has been understanding rock as a huge, messy family rather than a closed label. Its history includes legends such as Bob Dylan, Iggy & The Stooges, Patti Smith, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Sex Pistols, Deep Purple, Blondie, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, Slash, Chris Isaak, Joan Jett, Social Distortion, Wilco, The Pogues, Bad Religion, Loquillo, Soziedad Alkoholika, Los Enemigos and many more. That list explains the festival’s reputation: it has not only brought major names, it has also defended branches of rock that other festivals often treat as nostalgia or filler.

Recent programming confirms that breadth. In a single edition, Alice Cooper, Social Distortion, The Hives, Imelda May, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Old Crow Medicine Show, Evaristo, Sleaford Mods, Carpenter Brut, Superchunk, Circle Jerks and Tropical Fuck Storm can all coexist. That mixture might look strange elsewhere, but at Azkena it makes sense. The festival knows rock audiences do not listen in straight lines: someone may come for a shock-rock legend, stay for an Americana band, dive into a classic punk set, discover a garage oddity and end the night with something far more industrial than traditional.

Trashville is one of the keys to that personality. It works like a festival inside the festival, a wilder refuge for garage, surf, rockabilly, psychobilly, fast riffs and bands that seem to play better the closer they are to the audience. There, rock loses any solemn varnish and becomes physical again: volume, sweat, humour, hair, leather, noise and a club feeling hidden inside a larger festival site. It is the kind of space that keeps Azkena from becoming too respectable.

The connection with the city matters as well. The free concerts in Plaza de la Virgen Blanca keep the festival from being locked inside Mendizabala; they bring it into the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz and mix it with vermouth, terraces, families, curious passers-by and daily life. Txiki ARF adds another layer: children, workshops, activities and families who understand rock as something that can also be inherited. That is why the Azkena crowd is so recognizable: veterans, younger fans, parents, record collectors, punk devotees, blues lovers, lifelong rockers and people who simply found there a way to belong.

Azkena Rock Festival matters because it has kept alive a broad, imperfect and deeply human idea of rock. It does not merely celebrate the past, and it does not chase every trend just to look young. Its best version lies in that balance: scarred legends, hungry new bands, a present city, stages with character and an audience that does not go only to watch, but to take part in a tradition that still breathes loudly in Mendizabala.
