Electric Castle

Some festivals use a historic building as scenery; Electric Castle has allowed its historic setting to define the entire event. Every summer, the grounds surrounding Bánffy Castle in the Transylvanian village of Bonțida become a temporary city of stages, audiovisual installations, campsites, late-night dancefloors and tens of thousands of visitors. Centuries-old walls sit beside LED screens, experimental architecture and enormous sound systems. That contrast between heritage and contemporary culture was not added once the festival became successful. It was part of the original reason for putting the event there.

Before Electric Castle, its founders had built a community through Boiler Events and a series of club nights and unconventional parties in Cluj and elsewhere in Romania. Mihai Păun and the wider team gradually increased the scale of those productions and began looking for something beyond another large party. Bánffy Castle offered the necessary leap: a dramatic site, a complicated history and enough distance from ordinary urban life to create a self-contained experience. The inaugural edition in June 2013 recorded 32,000 visits and featured Morcheeba, Pendulum DJ Set, Feed Me, Fritz Kalkbrenner and Dub Pistols among its artists.

Growth came almost immediately. Attendance increased to 79,000 in 2014 and 97,000 in 2015, when The Prodigy, Rudimental and Fatboy Slim helped establish the festival internationally. Electronic music remained deeply rooted in the event, especially after dark, but Electric Castle steadily expanded beyond it. Rock, alternative, hip-hop, pop, techno, house, drum & bass and experimental music began sharing the site. Over the years, Gorillaz, Florence + The Machine, Iggy Pop, Skrillex, Massive Attack, Bring Me The Horizon, Justin Timberlake and Justice could all make sense within the same festival identity. Eclecticism became more important than defending an original genre boundary.

The castle itself also evolved from backdrop into active participant. Historic interiors were opened for exhibitions and interactive new-media work, while the surrounding estate allowed stages and installations to spread into natural areas. Even the orientation of the main stage was reconsidered so sunset could become part of the nightly visual experience. At the same time, the organisers increasingly connected Electric Castle with the preservation and restoration of Bánffy Castle. That creates an unusual contradiction: a huge temporary event places enormous logistical pressure around a heritage site, yet its international visibility and financial support also contribute to keeping that site relevant and protected.

Camping became another defining element. Early assumptions that Romanian audiences might resist spending several nights in a field proved wrong; thousands now live inside EC Village during the festival. The campsite functions almost as a festival within the festival, with shops, food, services and its own music. That residential population supports Electric Castle’s near-24-hour rhythm. The event is not built around a simple sequence of afternoon concerts followed by silence. When major stages finish, DJs, smaller venues, installations, comedy, talks and other activities can continue, making the difference between daytime and nightlife increasingly fluid.

The pandemic interrupted the normal progression just before the eighth edition. The conventional 2020 event was postponed and did not return in its standard form in 2021. Instead, the team created EC_Special, a ten-day experiment spread between Bonțida and Cluj-Napoca, using fifteen venues and more than 400 live performances, DJ sets and new-media events. It was deliberately treated as something separate from the numbered festival. When EC8 finally returned in 2022 with Twenty One Pilots, Gorillaz, Disclosure, Moderat and Caribou, the original castle-centred format came back with it. Attendance reached 272,000, confirming that the audience had returned at almost full scale.

The following years moved Electric Castle into another category altogether. Macklemore and Iggy Pop appeared in 2023; Massive Attack and Bring Me The Horizon helped the tenth edition reach 274,000 visits in 2024; and the 2025 programme with Justin Timberlake, Queens of the Stone Age, Justice, Yungblud and Shaggy produced a record 289,000. The festival had spent its early years convincing international agents that a large production could work in a Romanian village. A decade later, artists who once might have considered Bonțida too difficult to route had become normal possibilities for its main stage.

The 2026 edition again demonstrated how wide the festival’s musical language has become. Twenty One Pilots and Teddy Swims shaped Friday; Nothing But Thieves, LP and Chase & Status moved Saturday between alternative rock, pop and club culture; and The Cure closed Sunday with a near two-hour set, while Dogstar brought Keanu Reeves to the same final-day programme. More than 262,000 attendances were recorded across the four days. EC13 is already confirmed for July 2027. Electric Castle has changed scale, length and musical emphasis repeatedly since 2013, but its most important piece of identity has remained remarkably stable: for a few days each summer, a Transylvanian castle stops feeling like a monument from the past and becomes the centre of a city that exists only while the music is running.
