Jazz:Re:Found

In the Monferrato hills jazz does not look for a stadium. It looks for a villa in Cella Monte, a Unesco-listed village, and an ear that had already passed through Vercelli and Turin. Jazz:Re:Found began in 2008 with Denis Longhi and Andrea Varini, after they founded Associazione Casanoego in 2007. The stated inspiration was Britain’s The Big Chill: a festival where concert and DJ set share the night, where jazz sits beside electronics and Black music without apologising to the club. The name, with its colons, reads like a reopened file. The gesture is that of people who find a genre again and seat it next to Four Tet or Moodymann.

The first edition was free in Vercelli. The figures that circulate — about one thousand five hundred to two thousand eight hundred people — should be treated as a cited range, not an official gate. The gesture matters: a Piedmont festival that starts by giving access away, at human scale, before it moves. Then came Turin, and around 2016 chronicles place the crowd near ten thousand. That city jump does not erase Vercelli: it explains it. Casanoego learned to fill a free night and, over years, to hold a wider weekend in the Piedmont capital and, later, in Monferrato.

Cella Monte now fixes the geography the public walks. Four festival days plus an inaugurale: not a single Saturday and not a month of residencies. A short arch in a hill village of vines and brick, far from mass-coast tourism. Anyone arriving understands the journey is part of the rite: car or train into Monferrato, roads between villages, the villa as site. No bowl, no stadium parking. A Unesco village that accepts, for those days, hearing concerts and sets where by day you hear the silence of cellars.

Musical identity is the crossing The Big Chill had tried in England and that Longhi and Varini translated into Piedmont: jazz and house in the same arch, electronics and Black music as relatives, not guests from another bill. The festival’s CV cites, to explain that width, names that are not ornament: De La Soul and Afrika Bambaataa on the hip-hop and floor-culture side; Grandmaster Flash and Moodymann for the DJ craft; Four Tet and The Cinematic Orchestra for the crossing of electronics and composition; Ludovico Einaudi for an Italian ear that does not need a club to fill a villa. Those names date a generation of programming; they do not turn the text into a list.

The experience starts in the village. You walk alleys, look for shade in July or whichever date falls, enter a concert and step out to a DJ set when the inaugurale or the night asks. The public mixes people from Turin, Milan or farther with Monferrato neighbours who suddenly have a festival at the door. No valley campsite on mega-meeting scale; hill lodging, agriturismo, the choice of sleeping nearby or returning to the valley. By day Cella Monte looks like a Unesco visit; at night, when house and jazz take turns, the same brick sounds like a refinding.

Casanoego is not an empty logo. It is the 2007 association that lets two names — Longhi, Varini — hold a project that changed cities without changing its thesis: jazz is found again when it is allowed to dance. That thesis avoids the open-air conservatory as much as the rave without memory. In Vercelli it was a gifted night; in Turin, a scale of thousands; in Cella Monte, a village that lends its silence and its heritage. Each move gained landscape or capacity; none asked the festival to become only one of those things.

Anyone comparing Jazz:Re:Found with a theatre jazz festival has the wrong door. Anyone comparing it with a Turin warehouse does too. The midpoint — Unesco villa, four days, inaugurale, concerts and DJ sets — is the character. Hill heat, road dust, Monferrato wine on surrounding tables are not brochure copy: they are the practical condition of hearing Einaudi or Four Tet away from an anonymous compound. The landscape works. The bill, when it cites those names, only confirms the ear wanted width from the start.

The meeting’s legacy is not copying The Big Chill. It is proving that a Piedmont association could, from 2008, start free in Vercelli, grow in Turin toward ten thousand and then sit in Cella Monte without giving up the jazz-and-house crossing. Longhi and Varini did not ask for a stadium. They asked for a village and a thesis of refinding.

Jazz:Re:Found remains a pact between Casanoego and a Monferrato that accepts, four days plus an inaugurale, speaking improvisation and dancefloor in the same villa. From Vercelli to Unesco brick, from the fifteen hundred to Turin’s range, the festival shows Italian hill jazz did not need an inflatable field. It needed two founders, a 2007 association and an ear willing to seat De La Soul beside Einaudi.
