Locus Festival

Locus Festival is a jazz, soul and funk festival in Locorotondo, in Puglia’s Itria Valley, Italy. The first edition ran in 2005. Bass Culture Srl conceived and produced it, with Gianni Buttiglione as artistic director, in partnership with the Municipality of Locorotondo. It is not LOCUS, the UK junglist gathering. It is not another Italian region’s similarly named event. It is the Apulian festival that began in the circular town whose Latin name, Locus Rotundus, explains the title and the tie to the land.

Bass Culture had formed in 2001 with Vincenzo Bellini, Gianni Buttiglione, Paolo Corrado Salato and Mimmo Pizzutilo. Four people from the local music world who wanted to work from Puglia, not leave. In 2005 the town hall asked them for a festival that would lift Locorotondo out of an empty August. They started in the historic centre, among cummerse and squares, with jazz and black music as the spine. The name points to the round plan of the old town. The logo picks up trulli in concentric rings. The ground was not a take-down campsite: it was the town itself, with olive groves and the valley in view. The early editions were hard to stage. Attention jumped when Franco Battiato played in 2007. From then on the festival was read beyond the province. Apulian summer weighs: dry heat, olive shade and a crowd that moves between the old town and the masseria without losing stage time. In the historic centre the cummerse and squares force a walking route; at Ferragnano the masseria yard holds the volume inside stone walls.

Over the years the formula opened beyond Locorotondo alone. There were nights in Bari, on the Adriatic coast and in other Apulian towns, always with the summer core in the white village of the Itria Valley. Masseria Ferragnano, at the edge of the municipality, came to hold the paid concerts among olives and stone. In the centre, Piazza Aldo Moro hosted talks, cinema and free sets. The crowd mixes neighbours, trulli holidaymakers and people arriving from Bari or Brindisi. You arrive by narrow road or by Ferrovie del Sud Est. You do not cross a tent field as the only door. You drop into the town, walk, or take a short link to the masseria. By day there is hard August light and local tastings. At night the volume rises beside the olives, not against a concrete stadium. Ferrovie del Sud Est have appeared as official carrier in documented editions, with links toward Locorotondo on concert nights.

The bill explains the identity better than a slogan. Locorotondo has hosted Lauryn Hill, George Clinton, Seun Kuti with Egypt 80, Kings of Convenience, Paolo Nutini, Caparezza and, in later cycles, contemporary jazz and black-music names such as Roy Ayers, Ezra Collective, Makaya McCraven, Sun Ra Arkestra or Fatoumata Diawara. This is not a list to copy a poster. It is proof the festival crosses soul, funk and jazz without refusing pop or rock when the programme asks. The same August can put an afrobeat set next to an Italian song headliner. The crowd moves between the paid masseria and the free square. Anyone seeking only a franchise mega-festival has the wrong scale. Anyone seeking only a room jazz club has the wrong landscape. From 2018 Tormaresca, of the Antinori group, appears as official partner tied to wine tasting around the festival.

There is no need to mix this Locus with LOCUS on the British junglist circuit. There the name points to sound-system bass culture in the United Kingdom. Here Bass Culture is the Locorotondo company and the frame is Puglia. It is also not another southern city using “locus” as a generic Latin word. If a poster shows a UK warehouse and says LOCUS, that is not this one. This one has Locorotondo, Masseria Ferragnano, the Itria Valley and 2005. The name clash stops at the map and the organiser. Bass Culture’s production describes the build as raising and striking a small town in a few days, with stable local suppliers from the start.
