About the festival

In Carpentras the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu is not an anonymous rave compound. It is the yard of a historic hospital: stone, Vaucluse heat, a small city Pascal Maurin wanted to put on the house and techno map. Kolorz Festival was born in 2010 of that Provençal stubbornness. Anyone arriving in search of Hungarian Kolorádó — woods, accent, scout park — has the wrong lettering. Here the name goes without a mark, the organiser is Maurin and the agency is called Effervescence.

The format has two grounds and two seasons. In summer the gathering steps into the Hôtel-Dieu courtyard: sky, hot stone, a floor that feels human in scale. In winter it moves into Espace Auzon, a covered hall, another acoustic, another coat. That is not a calendar extra. It is the thesis: the same city, the same ear, two bodies. Anyone who only knows the June courtyard has not heard the March Kolorz. Anyone who only knows Auzon has not sweated the August stone.

Maurin signs the origin and sometimes the bill: coverage also remembers him as Peck, a DJ on his own lineup. Effervescence does not appear as a soda brand on the canvas. It appears as the office that turned a town wish — to do something for the renommée of Carpentras — into a house and techno festival. In 2020, at ten years, Le Dauphiné told it this way: artists who treat the town as a European stop, not as a filler village. The number ten anchors a decade; it does not open a chapter of what follows.

The ear is house and techno, with a disco wing when the bill asks for it. Names such as Cerrone, Folamour or Octave One serve to hear the range — heritage, contemporary house, Detroit groove — not to turn the text into a list. Maurin has said he likes mixing historic figures with younger DJs and local talent. The Kolorz crowd does not buy a Berlin warehouse exported south. They decide to travel to a Carpentras courtyard that declares itself electro without ceasing to be Provençal.

The audience experience is inferred from the real format. In summer you reach the centre, you cross a courtyard, you sweat. There is mistral or a heat that sticks to the stone. You drink, you dance, you look for shade in an arch. There is no woods camping: there is a hotel, a car, a train, or the town itself. In winter you enter Auzon, you leave the coat, you last until late in a hall that does not pretend to be a clearing. Both nights ask for a standing crowd. The after is not a club street two blocks away: it is Carpentras, which by day is a market again and, a few times a year, a dancefloor.

This courtyard must not be mixed with Kolorádó. There the accent marks Hungary, Csete and Vera, a cserkészpark, electronic music and indie in the mud. Here Kolorz is Maurin, Effervescence, Hôtel-Dieu and Auzon, Vaucluse house and techno. Mixing them is mixing a scout camp with a stone hospital. Kolorz is also not mixed with a generic Côte beach techno: Carpentras is not a canvas brand by the sea. It is an inland town that bet on DJs.

Scale is told with caution. Coverage speaks of thousands, not of an island mass. The ceiling is set by the courtyard and the hall: the place can fill without pretending to be a coastal open-air. That measure is part of the character. Anyone coming from Avignon or farther does not find a peri-urban compound of endless fences. They find a centre and a name that fits a weekend. A decade of growth does not erase the origin: a town wish, not a franchise plan.

By day Carpentras is still a market, a narrow street, a town that does not pretend to be Berlin. That contradiction is the character: you eat, you cross the square, and at a certain hour the courtyard or Auzon asks for another body. Anyone coming from farther away soon understands that the festival does not swallow the city. The city swallows the festival for a few nights and then takes the silence back. There is no need to invent a coastal after. The contrast is enough: Hôtel-Dieu at seven in the evening, and the same yard when the volume no longer asks permission.

Anyone who leaves the Hôtel-Dieu with the stone still warm understands why Maurin did not go to a coast. Between the courtyard and Auzon, between Peck and Effervescence, between house and techno, Carpentras had a festival that did not borrow its lettering from Hungary. Kolorz — without the accent — anchors the thesis: you dance in a summer hospital and in a winter hall, in the same city. What remains is a Provençal gathering that learned to be European without ceasing to be of Vaucluse.
