LIDO SOUNDS

LIDO SOUNDS is a pop, rock and hip hop festival in Linz, Austria. The first edition ran from 16 to 18 June 2023 at the Urfahraner Marktgelände, on the left bank of the Danube. Arcadia Live and LIVA put it on. It is not LIDO Festival, the AEG date in Victoria Park, London, in 2025. The names sit close. The river, the tarmac and the city do not.

Arcadia Live, with Filip Potocki, and LIVA, with Dietmar Kerschbaum, built the meeting without public money. Local press, including Krone, underlined that: it was not a subsidised festival. In Linz the Ahoi-Festival had been discontinued. LIDO SOUNDS did not revive it with the same poster. It left a second stage called Ahoi! Pop Summer Stage. Ahoi’s memory stayed on the stage, not on the main brand.

The site is a fairground, not a meadow. The Urfahraner Marktgelände is tarmac, halls and a market plot beside the Danube. There is no camping. People who come from Vienna take the train and go home the same day. Figures from 2023 speak of about 25,000 to 30,000 a day and a daily crowd of around eighty percent. You enter, you listen, you leave. A hotel or a train replaces the tent. The river sits beside you, but you do not sleep on the bank. On a fair day the ground does not give. On an English field it does. Here you walk on slab and look for hall shade when June presses. Food is stall food, not campsite cooking.

There were about thirty bands and two stages. Friday 16 June carried international pop and rock: Florence + the Machine, Giant Rooks, My Ugly Clementine. Interpol sat on the cover of that edition. Saturday 17 June shifted toward German-language rock and a local mix: Die Toten Hosen, Wanda, Beatsteaks, Juju. Sunday 18 June closed with German urban pop and hip hop: Peter Fox, Cro, Apache 207. Three days, three crowds, the same tarmac.

That split is not a genre menu to fill space. In Linz Friday can feel more European and Saturday more Austrian. Sunday shifts again. Anyone who does all three days hears stadium pop, German pub rock and radio rap. Anyone who does one day picks a tribe. The second stage, Ahoi! Pop Summer Stage, holds smaller names while the main stage takes the close. The site is compact: you do not walk far between fences.

Getting there is a city trip. Urfahr sits across the Danube from the old centre. You cross a bridge. You step off a tram or a train. There is no mud path. There is pavement and a fairground gate. June heat sits on the asphalt. There is no forest shade. There is tent shade and hall shade. People arriving from Linz Hauptbahnhof or from Vienna time the day by platforms, not by tents. After the headliners the after moved to the Brucknerhaus, the concert hall by the river. The festival does not die on the last encore. It moves into a building with seats and room acoustics. The change of floor — tarmac to hall carpet — marks the close more than an outdoor encore.

The scale — thirty thousand a day and no tents — asks for different logistics than a field. People have to leave toward the train. People have to eat without cooking on a stove. Organisers have to accept that eighty percent do not sleep in Linz. That marks the mood: less campsite, more day trip. Less fire pit, more platform. The Danube is a visual edge, not a campsite. Visitors from Vienna time the day by the return timetable. A late Sunday set has to end with enough time for the last useful train, not for a walk back to a tent.

LIDO SOUNDS should not be hunted in London. LIDO Festival in 2025 is another product, another park, another promoter. There the name comes from Lido Field. Here it comes from a new meeting on the Urfahr bank, after Ahoi. There is also no English lawn to expect. There is a market, tarmac and two stages. Pop, rock and hip hop fit that fairground because the bill splits by day, not because the site looks like a British field.

LIDO SOUNDS reads as Arcadia Live and LIVA’s festival on the Linz Marktgelände: three June days, a train from Vienna, no camping and no public money.
