Openair Frauenfeld

Openair Frauenfeld is the hip hop festival on the Grosse Allmend, north of Frauenfeld, in Thurgau. Markenlandschaft puts it on 50 hectares and calls it the largest urban festival in Europe, with about 50,000 people a day. The same card prints a start in 1987 and, beside that, since 1985. Wikipedia, the NZZ and the Thurgauer Zeitung leave the first one in July 1987, under the name Out in the Green: FC Frauenfeld and Ermano Conti, with Free and Virgin. The Zeitung counts about 30,000 and names Status Quo, Marillion and Third World. The NZZ counts 25,000, rock and blues. In 1994, still under that name, the Reitplatz in Winterthur. In 1998, the Rolling Stones. After red figures, Ministry of Rock. The NZZ puts Die Fantastischen Vier in 2000 as the first hip hop act and Wolfgang Sahli, Mister OAF, in charge from 2003. Wikipedia says First Event AG has run it since 2004. The name Openair Frauenfeld dates from 2006. In 2007, the lower meadow, the Auenfeld, because the Allmend was already taken. In 2017 Live Nation bought the majority. Mainland, in Zurich, books the acts and in 2018 passed entirely to Live Nation. Sahli chairs the board. René Götz is the CEO, according to Nau. The address Markenlandschaft gives is Zürcherstrasse 305, 8500 Frauenfeld.

The homepage, read on 28 September 2026, still sells a three-day July. Those digits are not printed. July 2026 is already walked: Thursday the 9th to Saturday the 11th. Nicolas Geissbühler counts 28,000 on Thursday, 36,000 on Friday and 41,000 on Saturday, 105,000 in all. The booking budget, he writes, was half the previous summer, because Justin Timberlake and the big names cost too much. Three summers earlier there were 94 acts. In 2026, 40. For a year there has been a single main stage, instead of the double that took turns. The Royal Arena is behind. La Fabrik asks for 18. The headliners, apart from Sido, fit in 60 minutes. Ski Mask the Slump God, Homixide Gang and BHZ reach an hour. The slot before the headliner stays empty.

Sido, with a band and with Sido and Friends, filled an hour and a half. After three songs he shouted: Ist das jetzt wieder ein Hip-Hop-Festival? Tausend Tattoos and Astronaut sounded. Mein Block did not. Kontra K, Kitty Kat, B-Tight and Harris came up, from the 2004 project Deine Lieblings-Rapper, and a boy named Deno. Nura, of SXTN, was on the grounds and did not come up for the song she shares with Sido and B-Tight. The review does not title that piece. Rin, who first stepped onto the OAF about ten years earlier, brought Reezy and Schmytt. Geissbühler gives him 9.5. BHZ premiered Moshpit, still unreleased, and said there was no better place for that first time. They remembered Pablo, the member who had died a few years earlier. The Park Stage was too small for them and, with the new open gap, the people fitted.

Yeat and Ken Carson, he writes, rapped little and shouted a lot, on full playback, with flames, CO2 and lasers without a plan he could see. The crowd celebrated them. Tiefbasskommando dropped out and on Friday La Fabrik passed to Jule X and the Vokuhila-Mafia, from Bern. First SGB, then two and a half hours of Jule X, with Lil Bruzy, LCone, Mimiks and Buds, from Biel. A few hundred in front. The next day, L Loko and Drini, from Zurich, drew fewer. Sic4rio took the mask off for the first time. Of Swiss names on the bill, Geissbühler counts two: Nativ opens La Fabrik at 3:00 p.m., 30 minutes, and EAZ and Xen open the Arena, 35. Sixty-five minutes of Swiss hip hop. Of artists read as not men, six on the announcement: Bia, Molly Santana, BK the Rula, Ceren, Kiarababa and OG Lubia. Bia dropped out and a man replaced her. Santana opened the Arena at 4:20 p.m.

The same writer's archive walks the Friday of 2025: Young Thug, on time, with pyrotechnics, rapped live, with no backing vocals, 27 songs. The London, Hot and Pick Up the Phone were there. A$AP Rocky, that time, 15. Rocky had come in when the organisation pulled Justin Timberlake, after part of the crowd rejected him. On Saturday, 50 Cent opened with P.I.M.P. and Candy Shop, dancers and two breakdancers, at least six outfits, and ran more than 15 minutes past the slot, with more than 30 songs. His voice grew hoarse. Geissbühler calls him 50. The Süddeutsche, in the announcement, had left him at 49. blue News puts him on the Arena and records Lee: they respect 50 Cent and that music is not theirs. RAF Camora, the same night, brought out a sports car that had been behind a curtain. Jule X asked who had a hangover. The site is kept.
