About the festival

Ripollet Rock Festival is one of Spain's longest-running free rock and metal festivals, held in the town of Ripollet near Barcelona, Catalonia. Established in 1993, the event emerged from a local community of music enthusiasts who wanted to create greater opportunities for live performances and establish a gathering place for fans of heavier musical styles. Today, it takes place at Parc dels Pinetons as part of Ripollet's annual Festa Major, presenting Spanish and international bands in an accessible outdoor environment. Its programming concentrates primarily on metal and rock, occasionally incorporating folk influences through performers who combine traditional melodies and instrumentation with amplified guitars. Throughout its history, the festival has remained committed to free admission, independent organization, and the development of a strong musical community. This philosophy has helped transform a modest local initiative into a recognized event within Catalonia's concert calendar, attracting audiences interested in established performers and emerging talent.

The origins of the festival can be traced to April 1985, when a group of young heavy metal enthusiasts launched the radio program Viaje al Reino del Metal on Ràdio Ripollet. Led by Paco González, the program became an important platform for introducing local listeners to Spanish and international rock music. Its organizers repeatedly proposed creating a rock festival during the town's annual celebrations, but their requests initially received little support. In 1990, they independently organized a concert featuring Bronce, Legion, and Fuck Off, demonstrating that a substantial local audience existed for this music. Their persistence eventually resulted in permission to organize the first edition in 1993 at Can Masachs, using a vacant outdoor site and temporary facilities. Although the original concert relied on limited financial resources and volunteer assistance, it attracted approximately 1,500 spectators. The unexpectedly strong attendance encouraged local authorities to support the initiative and created the foundation for a festival that would grow throughout the following decades.

During the 1990s, Ripollet Rock gradually expanded its musical program and began welcoming bands from outside the surrounding region. In 1994, Basque group Su Ta Gar appeared, followed by a 1995 lineup featuring Barón Rojo, Bronce, and Zinky Barú. A particularly important moment occurred in 1997 when Ska-P performed alongside Color Humano and Discípulos de Otília, attracting more than 6,000 attendees. That year also marked the formal recognition of Associació Ripollet Rock as the festival's organizing association, consolidating work that its members had undertaken since the first edition. In 1998, the event moved to a football ground and featured Hamlet and Ktulu, further strengthening its reputation. Around the beginning of the new century, the organizers formally adopted the name Ripollet Rock Festival after it appeared in an independent music publication. These developments established a recognizable cultural identity grounded in support for regional musicians, ambitious artistic programming, and close ties to the town's annual festivities.

International participation became increasingly important as the event developed. Panama's Los Rabanes appeared in 1999, marking an early international milestone, while the following years brought influential European metal performers. Grave Digger played in 2000, Primal Fear and Exterminator appeared in 2005, and later editions welcomed acts such as Edguy, Moonspell, Bonfire, and Epica. The increasing requirements of live production and the need to accommodate larger audiences led to several venue changes, including Parc Massot, the local football ground, and the Cadesbank industrial area. In 2008, the festival established its principal home at Parc dels Pinetons, providing a more suitable outdoor location for large-scale performances. The park subsequently became closely associated with the event's visual identity and the traditional opening period of Ripollet's Festa Major. These changes allowed the festival to continue presenting internationally recognized bands while preserving its roots in a community-driven musical initiative.

Free admission remains one of Ripollet Rock Festival's defining characteristics. Associació Ripollet Rock works with Ripollet's local government and other collaborators to deliver a professionally organized concert experience without charging audiences for entry. The festival provides essential services at Parc dels Pinetons, although it does not operate an official camping area. Its program typically concentrates on one evening of performances, allowing several bands to appear before a large gathering of metal enthusiasts. In 2025, Sonata Arctica headed a lineup that also included Moonlight Haze, Noctem, Xtasy, and Trayax. The thirty-third edition, held on August 28, 2026, featured Rhapsody of Fire, Crematory, Serious Black, and Leyendärian among its advertised performers, continuing a strong focus on melodic, symphonic, and powerful contemporary metal traditions. These lineups demonstrate the festival's ability to remain relevant to international audiences while supporting Spanish bands and maintaining an atmosphere shaped by dedicated fans and volunteers.

Ripollet Rock Festival has become an important example of cultural continuity through independent music organization. Its evolution from a radio-inspired concert into a long-established festival illustrates how determination, volunteer commitment, and municipal cooperation can sustain a musical project over several decades. The participation of internationally recognized bands has brought visibility to Ripollet, while the inclusion of local and national performers has created opportunities for artistic development. Free entry remains essential to its identity, enabling audiences from different backgrounds and generations to experience live rock and metal without financial barriers. The event's continuing association with the Festa Major also strengthens the connection between music and the town's civic traditions. With more than thirty editions behind it, Ripollet Rock represents an enduring celebration of amplified music, community participation, and the relationship between passionate audiences and the artists they support.
