About the festival

Tomavistas is the pop, rock and hip hop weekend at the Caja Mágica, in Madrid. Carlos Marcos, in El País, walked the first of the three days of the ninth edition: the night of Thursday 29 May 2025. JC Peña, in Mondo Sonoro, had walked the Friday and the Saturday of the eighth, dated 25 May 2024, when the festival still took the car park of the same grounds. In 2024 the capacity had grown almost threefold, there were four stages, shade was missing in the afternoon and there was no grass on the asphalt. In 2025 Carlos counted three stages, the two big ones alternating, and a crowd that was mostly young.

Amaia Romero, from Navarre, 26, had 75 minutes. She opened with Tocotó. She drew on Si abro los ojos no es real, her third album: Magia en Benidorm, M.A.P.S. and Auxiliar. She sang Tengo un pensamiento, the one she had taken to La Revuelta. Santos que yo te pinté, her version of a Los Planetas song, she did on the highest platform, gripping the mic stand, with violin and guitar. In the photos of the piece itself appear Yamaguchi, with guitarist Luis Martínez, and Ya está, on the harp. She hit Me pongo colorada, by Papá Levante, and closed with Bienvenidos al show. She and her five musicians danced a farewell samba and hugged behind the stage. There were about 5,000 people, half full. She said "Joé, qué bien lo estamos pasando". Of the heeled shoes: "Madre mía estos zapatos, voy a acabar ensangrentada". Of the dress: "Que me estaba quedando en bolas". She changed Tierno Galván's line to "ahora a ponerse un poco borrachitos y a disfrutar". She played piano, harp and guitar, and she danced.

Then Mala Rodríguez rapped, raised in Seville and born in Jerez, 46. She was marking 25 years of Lujo ibérico. She opened with Tengo un trato. She sang Tambalea on top of the DJ table and invited people up to dance. From La cocinera came the lines about polishing and sanding, rap without little lights, and tickling life. She wore short black, with silver straps and fringe. In a photo in the piece she raps in the crowd. Carlos recalls that first album put her, at 20, into a Spanish hip hop of men.

On the Friday of the eighth, in the car park, La Luz did surf and psychedelia, with no titles, and Repion played on the next stage. Bodega mixed post-punk and indie. Standstill returned with intensity. Dinosaur Jr. had sound trouble. When it was fixed, they played Freak Scene and Feel the Pain. Lou Barlow's bass dropped out at moments. Los Planetas were marking thirty years of Super 8. They opened with De viaje, as a quartet, without Eric on drums. Then Qué puedo hacer, Rey sombra and Brigitte. J, no longer shy, said they were still there and remembered his imitators. Then La caja del diablo, Manchas solares, Nuevas sensaciones and Mi hermana pequeña. At the same hour, Alcalá Norte replaced Dry Cleaning. Editors reread Killer, by Adamski and Seal. The Blaze closed that day. Hinds and Melenas shared a stage, with no titles.

On the Saturday, Laetitia Sadier, of Stereolab, joked "Gracias por coceros" under the sun, with no loose titles. Villagers, with Conor O'Brien, left no titles either. Derby Motoreta's Burrito Kachimba sang La fuente and dedicated the concert to Los Estanques. They returned the gesture and brought out a fake George Michael who then walked the festival. The Jesus and Mary Chain started lukewarm, with a canned sound, and then put venom into Sidewalking, Blues from a Gun and Just Like Honey. They closed with Reverence. Phoenix, from Versailles, leaned the stretch on Alpha Zulu, the 2022 album, with stops at career hits Peña does not name, synced projections and the Swedish drummer Thomas Hedlund.
