About the festival

Ultra South Africa Cape Town is one of Ultra’s most important African city editions and a key piece in understanding how Ultra Worldwide adapted to South Africa. It is not a separate festival from Ultra South Africa, but the Cape Town edition within a national format that has historically connected two poles: Cape Town and Johannesburg. That duality is part of its identity. Johannesburg brings urban density, industry, club culture and metropolitan energy; Cape Town brings landscape, sea, mountain, open air, tourism, coastal nightlife and a visual image that fits perfectly with Ultra’s spectacular language.

The arrival of Ultra South Africa in 2014 was symbolic. Ultra was already a global brand strongly associated with Miami, but its landing in South Africa opened a different door: the possibility of bringing the festival to a country with its own electronic scene, strong club culture, enormous musical diversity and a young audience used to mixing global sounds with local identity. Cape Town did not simply receive an international franchise; it received a version of Ultra that had to speak with South African character.

The first Cape Town edition took place at Cape Town Ostrich Ranch, an open-air venue in the Philadelphia area, outside the urban center, offering space, horizon and a destination-festival feeling. That site, now closely associated with The Ostrich, became an important part of the event’s DNA. It is not neutral ground or just a field: it is a space that allows large production, crowds, separated stages and an outdoor electronic experience built around Ultra’s aesthetic of screens, lights, bass, pyrotechnics and stage design.

From the beginning, the festival mixed global names with South African talent. Tiësto, Afrojack, Alesso, Martin Garrix, W&W, Nicky Romero and Krewella represented the international EDM sound that dominated the 2010s, while artists such as Black Coffee, Goldfish, Mi Casa, DJ Fresh SA and other local names connected the event to South African music culture. That combination was essential. Ultra Cape Town could attract those dreaming of a Miami-style experience, but it also needed to feel tied to the country’s own scene.

Over the years, the Cape Town venue has moved between spaces such as Cape Town Stadium, Kenilworth Racecourse and The Ostrich. Each site gave the festival a different tone. Cape Town Stadium brought urban image and monumental infrastructure; Kenilworth Racecourse offered scale and access within the city; The Ostrich returned the event to a more outdoor, expansive and destination-driven electronic feeling outside the center. For a historical database, this mobility matters because it shows that Ultra South Africa Cape Town is not only a brand, but a series of spatial adaptations around one identity.

Musically, Cape Town has a rich personality because South Africa does not experience electronic music only through global EDM. The local scene has a deep relationship with house, deep house, Afro-house, amapiano, techno, club music and hybrid sounds. That is why, although the Main Stage keeps the Ultra formula of big drops, anthems, progressive, big room and international names, spaces such as RESISTANCE and other stages allow the festival to speak with deeper, more rhythmic and more African sounds. In Cape Town, Ultra cannot be only an import; it needs to breathe with the local pulse.

The 2026 edition reflected that tension well. John Summit, DJ Snake, Axwell and Afrojack b2b R3hab represented the global and massive side, while Dennis Ferrer, Shimza, Major League DJz, Caiiro, De Capo, Enco Napa, Mpho.Wav and Kid Fonque connected with house, Afro-house and South African electronic culture. That mixture is precisely what gives Ultra South Africa Cape Town its value: an international brand with large-scale production, powered by a region that has its own voice in dance music.

Ultra South Africa Cape Town matters because it proves that Ultra’s global map is not just about replicating Miami in other countries. In Cape Town, the brand mixes with landscape, electronic diaspora, African house, tourism, club culture and a city whose natural beauty gives any festival a different visual charge. It is Ultra looking toward Table Mountain, toward the Atlantic, toward the global south and toward a scene that does not only receive international electronic music, but transforms it from Africa.
