About the festival

Zürich Openair is one of Switzerland's major contemporary music festivals, held near Zurich Airport on grounds extending across the municipalities of Rümlang and Opfikon in the canton of Zurich. Established in 2010, the event is known for combining internationally recognized performers with electronic music, pop, rock, and independent artists in a large outdoor setting. Its program appeals to audiences interested in different musical styles, from major pop productions to alternative bands and DJ performances. One of its defining characteristics is its proximity to the city of Zurich, allowing visitors to combine the festival with urban entertainment, tourism, and convenient public transportation. The grounds have developed into a substantial entertainment environment with large stages, food vendors, visitor facilities, and recreational spaces. The combination of international lineups, extensive production, and a location close to one of Switzerland's principal cities has established Zürich Openair as a recognizable event within the country's summer cultural calendar.

The inaugural edition took place from August 27 to 29, 2010, under the slogan Festival Excess, City Access, reflecting its ambition to combine the energy of a major outdoor music event with the convenience of an urban location. The first festival attracted approximately 40,000 visitors and was presented in association with MTV, helping the new event gain wider visibility. Its organizers selected grounds near Zurich Airport because the location offered sufficient space for performances and festival infrastructure while remaining accessible through the regional transport network. Following its debut, the event did not take place in 2011 because the site required restoration and reorganization. Zürich Openair returned in 2012 with a redesigned layout, improved logistical arrangements, and an expanded four-day program. This second phase established a foundation for long-term development and attracted audiences interested in both contemporary music and the convenience of attending a festival near a major European city.

Throughout the 2010s, Zürich Openair developed a broad musical identity combining guitar-driven performances, international pop acts, and different forms of electronic dance music. Its organizers presented established performers alongside independent bands and emerging musicians, offering opportunities to experience contrasting genres within the same festival. Rock and indie concerts shared the schedule with DJ performances and electronic productions designed for large crowds. As the audience expanded, the organizers introduced additional facilities and refined stage production to accommodate increasingly ambitious performances. In 2017, the festival attracted approximately 80,000 visitors over four days, demonstrating its growing importance within Switzerland's live music industry. Attendance reached around 82,000 in 2019, confirming the event's established position before the pandemic. Its development reflected changing musical preferences while retaining an identity based on stylistic diversity and international discovery. The airport-side setting also helped distinguish it from Swiss festivals associated primarily with mountain scenery or rural landscapes.

The location of Zürich Openair is an essential part of the experience. The festival grounds lie near Zurich Airport, within the Glattbrugg and Rümlang area, creating an unusual relationship between music, transportation infrastructure, and the surrounding metropolitan environment. Visitors can reach the area using public transport and combine concerts with accommodation, restaurants, and activities in Zurich. Over the years, the site has featured large outdoor stages, elaborate lighting installations, hospitality areas, food outlets, and spaces for relaxing between performances. Certain editions have also offered camping facilities for visitors wishing to remain close to the grounds throughout the festival. The surrounding airport environment gives the event a distinctive visual character, contrasting the open-air stages with nearby aviation facilities and urban infrastructure. This accessibility has always been important to the festival's concept, allowing both residents and international visitors to participate without traveling to a remote rural destination. It also contributes to the event's reputation as a metropolitan music festival.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 editions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Zürich Openair returned in 2022 and continued attracting international performers. Subsequent years brought changes to the event's scheduling and overall format. The 2025 edition took place over two separate weekends, on August 22, 23, 29, and 30, bringing together a wide selection of artists. The program included Shawn Mendes, Tiësto, Anyma, Halsey, Empire of the Sun, Post Malone, Rita Ora, The Prodigy, Boris Brejcha, Scooter, Deichkind, and Patent Ochsner. These names reflected the festival's combination of internationally popular singers, large-scale electronic performances, alternative music, and artists with particular appeal to German-speaking audiences. Approximately 87,000 people attended the 2025 event. The lineup demonstrated the increasing prominence of electronic production and mainstream pop while maintaining links to the rock and independent traditions that influenced earlier editions. The two-weekend arrangement also represented a significant development in its presentation.

In February 2026, the organizers announced that Zürich Openair would not take place that summer, explaining that changes to the international festival calendar made it difficult to deliver the event at its customary standard. The break was described as an opportunity to reconsider the festival's artistic direction, improve infrastructure, and introduce new experiences. A return in 2027 at the existing airport-side location has been announced, although exact dates remain unconfirmed. The decision marks another transition in the history of a festival that has experienced expansion, changes in format, and occasional interruptions since 2010. Zürich Openair remains associated with major international performers, contemporary musical trends, and the distinctive convenience of its metropolitan setting. Its history illustrates how a festival can develop an identity through the relationship between diverse musical programming and a particular urban landscape. The planned return represents an effort to preserve that identity while adapting the experience to changing expectations among audiences and artists.
